Our Library collection

The library provides a varied collection of fiction and literature that encourages senior students to read widely. The extensive non-fiction collection is complemented by a technology-rich environment that provides access to sophisticated databases and online resources.

Our Library staff work hard to equip the students with advanced information skills so that they will become lifelong learners. The library is the busy hub of school life, and even when the lights are turned out the libraries are still working, providing on-line material to the school community through digital resources on our Library website including ClickView, Edrolo, eLibrary and more.

Our Library services

Check out our services tailored specifically for senior students as they complete their HSC.

Books and study guides

The Library has an excellent specialised collection of print resources that are designed to support Year 11 and 12 students with research and study.

The collection includes HSC study guides, textbooks, reference books, non-fiction, encyclopedias, primary and secondary sources.

Databases

Students are encouraged to join Blacktown Library or the NSW State Library to access online resources from school or home.

Book a personal tutorial with a Librarian if you would like help using the databases. Some of the Databases that are usful for HSC students include:

  • EBSCO  - ANZRC
  • JSTOR
  • HSC Studylab
  • Lynda
  • My Career Match
  • Opposing Viewpoints
  • NoveList
  • History or Science Reference Centres
Printing and photocopying
Printing and photocopying costs 20c per page for black and white, and 50c per page for colour. All student work for photocoping should be saved as a PDF file and emailed to Library staff or shared using Google apps. Students may then ask Library staff to assist with printing and paying at the circulation desk or by card at the front office.
Study sessions

Students will have regular study periods within the timetable. For every timetabled study period, students are expected to be in the Learning Hub or Library as indicated on the timetable. If students have a study session first thing in the morning, they may come in late (before Connect) or during the last session of the day they may swipe out at the front office and go home, upon return of the signed permission note.

Students in the library must be studying, researching, reading, writing or working. Students in the Learning Hub may be studying, relaxing, eating or collaborating in a quiet and respectful manner. Students must remain on school grounds at all times during a timetabled study session, and may not leave the Library or Learning Hub without permission.

Permission to work elsewhere in the College during study periods (Art, Music, Industrial Technology Workshop, Careers, Counsellors etc) is by Green Card only and must be signed by the teacher on duty in the study space. Green Cards must then be signed by the teacher in the alternative space and returned to the timetabled study space teacher at the end of the session.

For each Study period students should:

  • arrive on time – students will be marked late, which will impact attendance rates on Sentral. Study sessions will be included on Semester reports
  • students must sign in the Library or Hub on the computer terminals provided and check in with the supervising teacher, so attendance is accurately marked
  • students that do not sign in could be marked absent and considered for truanting as per timetable, with a follow up text message to parents
  • bring appropriate resources to study. Laptops and books can also be accessed in the Library including study guides and help
  • demonstrate respect for other students by working quietly, independently and not disturbing others
  • students are not to be using mobile phones without permission of the teacher on duty – please speak to teacher on duty for permission
  • remain on campus at all times during timetabled study sessions. Please note - students acknowledge their responsibility to not leave the campus when they sign in.

We know that students want to be productive and positive in their HSC, and good use of the Study period will set students up for success.

Quiet reading areas

Wyndham College is a reading community. Reading is an empowering, engaging, life-enhancing experience. An environment rich in high-quality talk about texts should involve both teacher-to-student and student-to-student talk. Our Library provides silent areas and collaborative areas for the purpose of enjoying, appreciating and learning from literature.

Student ID cards are used as Library cards and are available by the end of first term to all students. Students are expected to have a student ID card with them at all times when using the Library for security purposes. Students must have their photo taken and pay $10 to the front office to order a card. Students may borrow three fiction and three nonfiction books at a time. There is also borrowing permitted over the holidays and assessment periods.

New resources

New resources are often featured on display in the Library on the fronts and tops of the shelves. The Library welcomes new ideas and suggestion of books for our collection.

Please speak to Library staff if you would like to make a recommendation or send an email request to the Library at:

Need Help ?

Here are some of the things librarians do:

  1. Guide Students: through Information Literacy: In an age of instant information, librarians help students learn to ask better questions, find valid sources, and deconstruct the information. Take a quick glance at Facebook and you’ll see people falling for fake news and failing to understand media bias. We are in desperate need of media literacy and librarians are the ones best poised to make this a reality.
  2. Model the Curation Process: Librarians teach students the art and science of content curation, where they learn to connect ideas from multiple sources and apply a unique lens to the information. Content curation has become a critical skill in an age of instant information and librarians are often the ones with the most practice in this area.
  3. Inspire Passionate Readers: They ignite a passion for learning, whether a student is geeking out on an informational text or getting lost in a fantastical world of fiction.
  4. Develop Divergent Thinking: Librarians inspire students to think divergently and experiment with innovative ideas. The best libraries are spaces with a free exchange of ideas.
  5. Cultivate Creativity: Using design thinking, librarians can help students engage in research and development as they create empathy-driven design products. A.J. and I both added two sections to design thinking (in the LAUNCH Cycle) that included inquiry and research. Since then, we’ve seen countless librarians empowering students to own this process. Along the way, they learn systems thinking and project management, which are both critical skills in just about every industry.
