Year 12 Advice

NESA

Principal Karen Smith provides HSC update information from NESA and support resources for students as they work from home.

Message from the Principal

Hoping everyone is coping well. The college is making regular contact via classroom teachers and the whole wellbeing team. Staff are making contact via phone calls or emails. Students and parents may not recognise the call as the staff members number will appear as no caller is or private. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. The office is open and there are staff on-site to assist.

I am very aware that everyone is nervous and anxious about what is happening. Late yesterday NESA released information about HSC practical, performances, orals and major works. A summary of these changes are below. I have attached the media release from NESA for your viewing.

Latest advice from NESA

HSC students in Greater Sydney should not access the school site unless absolutely necessary. We consider the collection of major works to be essential. Students should contact the school or their teacher to make arrangements and adhere to strict COVID-safe practices when at school, including physical distancing and wearing a mask or face covering.

Oral language exams have been rescheduled to run from 14 August to 18 September for students in Greater Sydney. We will publish the revised timetable on Monday 26 July. Session dates, times and venues for oral language exams are being adjusted to limit contact between students from different schools in Greater Sydney.

Face masks must be worn at exam venues in Greater Sydney. At this stage, students can remove their mask during the examined conversation where perspex screens will be in place and there will be distance between the student and the examiner.

Dance performance exams have been rescheduled. The new dates are: 13-17 September for students in Greater Sydney. The Society and Culture Personal Interest Project due date has been extended to 9 August.

NESA will provide further advice next week on:

 hand in dates for major works

 drama and music exams.

The Stay Healthy HSC hub has advice on staying healthy, active and connected during the HSC. Students can use the resources for studying, self-care and staying informed. Students can access the hub vis this link : https://education.nsw.gov.au/student-wellbeing/stay-healthy-HSC?q=

Key messages to students from NESA

Students undertaking VET courses in 2021 will remain eligible for the Preliminary or HSC credit units if unable to complete work placement due to the direct impact of COVID-19.

HSC students can attempt the HSC minimum standard tests up to 6 times per year, with 14 days between attempts.

The COVID illness and misadventure process is available to HSC students whose work on major projects or preparation for performance exams is significantly impacted by COVID restrictions.

As information and situations are changing rapidly, we ask that you regularly check our normal communication channels for updates – email, Facebook, Instagram, Wyndham College website.

I wish to reassure all Year 12 and their families, that the College will ensure no student is disadvantaged and the well-being of our students is paramount. If there is anything the College can do to assist our students or families, please do not hesitate to make contact.

Please take care.

From NESA

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) COVID-19 Response Committee has announced a number of changes to the 2021 HSC timetable to minimise the impacts of COVID-19 on HSC students and schools.

NESA will make the following changes to upcoming HSC exams:

Reschedule the oral language exams to run from 14 August to 18 September for students in Greater Sydney and regional NSW.

Reschedule the dance performance exams to run from: 9 to 13 August in schools in regional NSW. 13 to 17 September in schools in Greater Sydney

Extend the due date for the Society and Culture Personal Interest Project by two weeks to 9 August

More information, including the proposed timetable for the rescheduled oral and dance exams will be provided as soon as possible.

To prevent the mixing of students from different schools, NESA will re-program the session dates, times and venues of the oral language exams in Greater Sydney. To avoid unnecessary travel, oral language exams for students in regional NSW will be held online where ever possible.

We are continuing to work closely with NSW Health and will provide a further update to schools early next week about due dates for the other major projects and Drama and Music performance exams currently scheduled for later in August.

CEO of NESA Paul Martin said students will obtain their HSC this year.

“My message to students is to continue studying and focus on achieving your best as we work with all schools to ensure the HSC continues with minimal disruption.

NESA has also released advice to help schools in Greater Sydney with contingency planning for the trial HSC exams.

The physical and mental wellbeing of students remains a priority as they continue studying for upcoming exams. The Stay Healthy HSC campaign is encouraging students to continue taking care of their health and wellbeing and importantly, asking for help if they need it.

Visit the Stay Healthy HSC hub for tips, resources and study advice for students and their parents.
