Assessment
Our senior teachers use a variety of strategies to assess student learning in the Preliminary year and HSC. Teachers observe students work in class and look closely at tasks throughout the year. Families receive a written report twice a year to communicate a clear picture of student achievement.
Assessment Tasks and Exams
We provide detailed information to students about what we expect throughout the year and how their work will be assessed. Students have a number of formal assessments throughout their schooling.
Handbooks
Please refer to the Wyndham College Assessment Handbooks below and make sure you are planning and preparing for each task.

Students should also refer to the HSC Rules and procedures to ensure they understand all NESA requirements.
Assessment FAQs
As part of our ongoing commitment to monitoring and supporting student learning, all Year 11 students will undertake two online Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT)
Students will complete:
- A 40-minute PAT Reading assessment
- A PAT Numeracy assessment
Both assessments will be conducted during Orientation Day and then at regular intervals throughout their time at Wyndham College.
PAT Adaptive assessments create an individualised testing experience by adjusting the difficulty of questions based on student responses. This provides a more precise and equitable measure of student achievement and growth.
These assessments are designed to track student progress since the PAT tests completed during Orientation Day last year. For students who did not participate in the previous testing cycle, these assessments will provide baseline data that will be used to measure future growth. Students will complete the PAT assessments again later in the year to help us monitor their progress over time.
Please note that students do not need to study or prepare for these assessments. The PAT tests are designed to measure the skills and knowledge students have developed through their regular learning experiences.
Students who are absent on either testing day will be required to complete the assessment in a catch-up session upon their return to school.
The data collected through PAT testing provides valuable insights that help teachers better understand each student's learning needs. This information supports us in tailoring classroom instruction, intervention programs, and extension opportunities to maximise student achievement and growth. If you have any questions regarding the PAT assessments, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Exams occur each year with timetables emailed to students. Most exams take place in the Hall or Gym and students with disabilities provisions use the designated areas. Disability provisions needs to have been applied for and accepted before any examination period.
- Students wear full school uniform to examinations
- Bring student ID card and display it on the desk
- Mobile phones are to be switched off and left in the student’s bag
- Students should be discouraged from making trips to the toilet while the examination is in progress
- Students must stay in the examination room for the full duration of the examination.
If students have a major problem on the morning of the examination, notify the Year Deputy or the front office on 02 9208 7100 as soon as possible, and make an illness or misadventure application as soon as you return to school.
You should complete an illness misadventure form in the following circumstances:
- you are prevented from attending any form of assessment task (including examinations) due to illness or unforeseen misadventure
- you consider that your performance in an assessment task (including examinations) has been affected by illness or misadventure during the assessment task.
If you were absent from the task this form must be completed and submitted immediately upon your return to school. All illness or misadventure appeals require a medical certificate with specific details of the issue. The treatment of assessment tasks or exams affected by illness or misadventure and illness or misadventure forms can be found in the Wyndham College HSC Assessment Handbook.
The Trial HSC exams occur in Term 3 in July or August each year. The timetable is published a few weeks before the exams are held and there is more information in the Assessment Handbook which is handed out at the start of Year 12.
All My Own Work (AMOW) is designed to give students the opportunity to understand, value and use ethical practices when locating and using information during their studies. This includes following the principles of ethical practice to avoid malpractice when students prepare their work.
To be eligible for entry into a Preliminary and/or Higher School Certificate (HSC) course, and for the award of the HSC, all students must complete AMOW or its equivalent.
See Library staff for assistance if you have not completed this program before attending Wyndham College.
